Do you respect diversity? Do you promote tolerance? Do you love quality literature?

Then this is the event for you! The Library together with the Marygrove Diversity Club is sponsoring a read-in that focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) authors. Faculty, staff, and students will prepare a dramatic reading from an LGBT author and then lead a brief discussion on the socio-historical context and import of that author. Please join us in celebrating diversity, teaching tolerance, and sharing our love of quality literature!

Date: Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Location: Beyond Words Art Gallery in the Library

One of our business databases has new features and content

Gale has just added some powerful new features and content to the database "Business & Company Resource Center." Now users have hundreds of new SWOT analyses to explore — including top global companies like AIG, CitiGroup, Freddie Mac and Wal-Mart. Additionally, the user interface has been updated with a contemporary new look and a “Publication Search” function has been added to the homepage.

How the state budget deficit will affect Michigan libraries

The services offered by Michigan libraries are in danger of being cut. These services include access to important Marygrove Library research databases like Academic OneFile, Wilson SelectPlus, ERIC, and Social Sciences Abstracts, to name a few, plus access to more than 2,700 full-text periodicals. Furthermore, our plans this year to join the statewide interlibrary loan group, MeLCat, may be jeopardized since cuts in funding would likely cripple the system, depriving library users of fast, easy access to collections across the state.

This letter from the President of the Michigan Library Association (pdf, 2 pages) provides an update on MLA's advocacy efforts. For more information, please contact any Marygrove Librarian: http://www.marygrove.edu/library/refservices.asp.

We're hiring! Graduate research assistant

The Library is looking to hire a Marygrove graduate research assistant to provide background information for a Library Visioning Project. S/he would...

...complete a literature review on the subject of the “information commons” in higher education today
...create a Blackboard organization of professional articles and websites, with an introduction (literature review) written by the grad assistant and a bibliography
...engage in original research, under the supervision of a librarian, which would involve a visit to at least one local (southeastern MI) college or university which has an information or learning commons facility in place, in order to interview staff and students and take digital pictures
...prepare a PowerPoint presentation which would define the concept, give background/historical information, give examples, trends or forecasts and pros and cons

Interested? Contact Linnea Dudley (Head of Reference, Instruction and Access Services) at 313.927.1349.

We have a winner!

In December the library received a number of clever suggestions for naming the newly furnished "back of the reference room."

Last week the library staff voted. The winning name: "The Spot," submitted by Diane Brown, Coordinator of MAT-CIA. Runner up: "The Student Station," submitted by Ronda Mew, Marygrove student.

Congratulations, Diane and Ronda! We'll see you at the library's circulation desk to claim your prize.
