Gale Database Updates

There has been a number of changes and additions this summer to the databases available through Gale.

Changes to Gale Databases

• Info Trac Onefile has changed its name to General OneFile. The General OneFile is a general interest index with millions of full-text articles.
• The Professional Collection database has changed to Educator's Reference Complete, with a selection of more than 450 full-text academic journals, hundreds of full-text reports, and many premier reference sources. Included content focuses on educational principles, child development and psychology, and best practices in education.

New Gale Databases

• Informe is a database reference tool providing indexing, images and full-text of popular Hispanic magazines -- not just translations. Also included is a thesaurus and interface that are uniquely designed for Spanish-speaking users.
• Business and Company ASAP provides information on companies, markets and industries. From market trends, mergers and acquisitions to current management theory and company overviews. Access business and trade journals, newspapers and company directory profiles with full text and images.
• The Business and Company Resource Center is a fully integrated resource bringing together company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information.
• ChiltonLibrary.com represents the most authoritative automotive repair information available to car owners. There are thousands of year, make and model combinations covering the most popular vehicles of the past 30 years, plus additional coverage of specialty models.

Featured Database: LexisNexis Academic

The current featured database is the completely redesigned LexisNexis Academic. With a simplified Easy Search search screen and improved navigation, LexisNexis Academic is easier than ever to use. With over 3,900 full-text sources indexed, LexisNexis Academic is a great place to find News, Business, and Legal information. Don't forget to check out the "How do I...?" and "View Tutorials" links in the Related Links section on the search screen for helpful tips on using the new interface.

Detroit History on Display in the Library: Remembering the '67 Riot... Lessons Learned or Lost?

The city of Detroit was rocked by a civil uprising in the summer of '67. What began as a raid on a "blind pig" in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 23rd quickly evolved into a riot in which large parts of city were put to the torch. Fueled by racism, poverty, police brutality, redlining, industrial decline, urban sprawl, high levels of unemployment, black militancy, and inadequate, affordable housing, the riot, which lasted for five days, would ultimately claim the lives of 43 Detroiters, leave 1189 more injured, and lead to over 7000 arrests. For many Detroit natives the sight of burning neighborhoods, tanks rolling down residential streets, and living under martial law for five long days are images and experiences that can never be erased from their memory and have colored their perceptions of the city and its government, police, and inhabitants to this day.

The question remains... after forty years have we learned our lessons from those long ago days of violence and turmoil or have we as a city simply grown more entrenched in our fear and intolerance?

New Casual Reading Collection

Have a little free time? Need a break from the textbooks? Why not curl up with a good story? The Marygrove College Library has created a small collection of fiction novels and bestsellers located in the Reference Room. The books are available for check out like other circulating books. The featured database this semester is InfoTrac Custom Newspapers, a collection of full text newspapers updated daily containing over 34 million articles from more than 500 U.S. and international newspapers. Of particular local interest is full-text coverage of the Detroit Free Press from March 2000 through April 2007.

Beyond Words Gallery: New Exhibit

A new exhibit went up this week in the Marygrove Library Beyond Words Gallery showcasing selected works from the Marygrove College Student Art Degree Show. For more student art, make sure to visit The Gallery on the fourth floor of the Liberal Arts building.

The Ark of Hope, the Earth Charter, & Sustainability

The Ark of Hope has arrived at Marygrove College in the Beyond Words Gallery of the Library! The Ark of Hope is an artistic effort to bring the Earth Charter to public awareness. The Earth Charter is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global community in the 21st century. There will be a reception on Tuesday, April 3 from 2-4 at the Ark of Hope Exhibit in the Library. At this reception Dr. Fike will sign Marygrove’s endorsement of the Earth Charter. The Ark of Hope will be on exhibit in the Marygrove Library Beyond Words Gallery through April 9.

In conjunction with this exhibit, the Marygrove community may also be interested in the Stop Global Warming Virtual March. Sign the online petition at stopglobalwarming.org and become part of the movement to demand solutions to global warming now.
