St. Leo's Soup Kitchen

Just a few days before Christmas, on December 22, 2008, staff and faculty from the Library and the Educational Technology Services department spent the morning at St. Leo's soup kitchen in Detroit.

With the help of the Marygrove community, we had collected several boxes of donations to bring with us. These included clothes, books, medicine, shoes, and toiletries. Joe Micallef, soup kitchen supervisor for the past 25 years, met us at the door to give us a tour of the breath-taking church. It was built in 1908 and incorporates beautiful stained glass windows from Germany.

In the basement of the church we sorted the donated items, packed bags of toiletries, prepared tables for the hot lunch, and organized the on-site library. Then we prepared food and greeted the 130 community members who arrived for a meal. Afterwards, during clean-up, we learned from Joe about the other services offered by St. Leo's, including dental, medical, hygienic (showers and barber), library, and legal services. In 2008, St. Leo's served more than 54,000 people - we feel so grateful to have been a part of this.

New Exhibit in the Beyond Words Gallery

The current exhibit in the library's Beyond Words Gallery features the photography of thirteen Mumford High School students, the result of a project funded by the Michigan Campus Compact in which students worked with Mumford and Marygrove instructors. The exhibit is titled Through Your Eyes and In Your Words: the Mumford Project, and it runs through December 16th, 2008.

Children of Incarcerated Parents Receive Books

With the help of Marygrove Library, more than 50 new books were purchased and will be presented to children of incarcerated parents during the Angel Tree ceremony on December 11, 2008, in Alumni Hall.

The Angel Tree Prison Fellowship Christmas Celebration gives us the opportunity to reach some of the hundreds of thousands of children who won't be spending Christmas with their parents.

The 46 children who arrive on campus December 11 will be presented with gifts, entertainment, refreshments, and a brief tour of campus. Thank you, Marygrove, for your help in brightening Christmas for these children!

New Art Database Added

The Marygrove Library has just added the Catalog of Art Museum Images Online (CAMIO) database to our collection. CAMIO is an online collection of art from prominent museums around the world, including the Detroit Institute of Arts. For more information on CAMIO, visit the site now (you made be prompted to enter your Marygrove user name & password).

Angel Tree Book Drive at the Marygrove Library

As part of the Marygrove College Angel Tree program, the Marygrove Library is conducting a book drive to provide children of incarcerated parents with new, age-appropriate books for Christmas.

The library has set up an Amazon wishlist to make it easy for you to choose appropriate books to purchase and donate to the program. Just choose the book you would like to donate, and during the checkout process make sure the shipping address is to:

Work Smart On The Web

There are lots of great services on the Internet that aim to help your productivity when working online. The latest issue of Computers in Libraries lists a number of them in this article available in the Academic OneFile database. You may need to login with your Marygrove ID and password to view this article from off-campus.

Banned Book Read-In

The 1st Annual Read-In will be held in the library's Beyond Words Gallery on September 30th from 3pm-6pm. This event takes place in conjunction with the American Libraries Association’s Banned Books Week, September 27th – October 4th. Please join the Library Staff, Faculty and students as they read freely from their favorite works. Join the dialogue as readers discuss the historical and societal contexts of banned and challenged books. Some of the works to be read include: Lolita, The Chocolate Wars and The Awakening. All of these banned books, plus many others, can be found in the Marygrove College Library collection.

Many questions regarding banned and challenged works abound: Why do people ban books? Why do so many classical works remain banned and/or challenged today? How can understanding weaken the argument to control and censor readership at any level? What can I do to help?

To view the American Libraries Association’s banned book list, please visit: ALA Banned Books or the Parents against Bad Books in Schools List of Lists. The PABBIS website focuses primarily on books found in K-12 schools – over 1,350 books to date!

In addition to being available by phone, email, and instant message, you can now also contact the reference librarian on duty by text message through your mobile phone. You can send a text whenever a librarian is on duty to 265010. Start your message with "marygrovelibrary:" (without the quotes), and then type your question. New Library Tutorials

Three new tutorials have been added to the Quick Reference Guides section of the library website. On the right side of the Quick Reference Guides page are links to basic search guides for the Academic Onefile and ProQuest databases, and also basic guide to the ERIC database to go along with the updated advanced ERIC tutorial.

Ebooks on Job Searching, Resumes, and Cover Letters

A large number of ebooks on resumes, cover letters, and job searching are available in the Marygrove Library Netlibrary collection. A list of these ebooks is linked to the library's Career and Employment subject page, where you can click on the link under Ebooks to see all the titles available.

Updated Quick Reference Guides Now Available

Updated Quick Reference Guides on using Marygrove email, Marygrove printing accounts, and APA formatting in Microsoft Word are available today. You can access these and all of the guides and tutorials available through the library at the Quick Reference Guides page on the Marygrove Library website.

New Exhibit in the Beyond Words Gallery

A new exhibit entitled Further Reflections on the AIDS Crisis is showing in the library's Beyond Words Gallery. This is part of the larger, multimedia exhibit in The Gallery (located on the 4th floor of the Liberal Arts Building) entitled AIDS: The Children Left Behind. These exhibits, featuring contributions from the NAMES Project – AIDS Memorial Quilts, will be on display through March 13.

Photo Exhibit: Jeff Pearson and the Marygrove Dance Company

The Library's Beyond Words Gallery is featuring images of the Marygrove Dance Company by photographer Jeff Pearson. The exhibit runs until February 8, 2008.

Free online videos in the Marygrove Catalog

More than 1,500 records from Annenberg Media programs (Learner.org) are now available through the Marygrove Catalog. These programs are free online teaching resource videos about a wide range of topics, such as mathematics, literature, science, history, art and much more. Many of the videos have accompanying web sites with support materials such as instructor guides and lesson plans.

First-time users must register for free to view the videos. For more information about these videos see http://www.learner.org/view_programs/view.programs.html.

You can find these online video titles in the Marygrove Library Catalog by typing learner.org in the search box. When you find one you'd like to view, click on the title then on the learner.org URL below the subject headings.

New ProQuest Database Collection

The ProQuest Curriculum Package has replaced the ProQuest Research Library. This unique collection coordinated exclusively for colleges and universities offers more than 2,600 full-text titles. The collection can be searched as a whole or in any combination of nine subject areas:

Replant, Renew: The Un-vacant Detroit

The new exhibit in the Library's Beyond Words Gallery is titled Replant, Renew: the Un-vacant Detroit, featuring the work of Marygrove photography students. The students' work represents an investigation of community gardens and public spaces in the city. The exhibit runs from October 19 through November 21.

Beginning September 20, the Beyond Words Gallery in the Library will be displaying the scherenschnitte work of Marie-Helene Grabman. The Beyond Words Gallery is open the same hours as the library, so stop by any time the library is open to see the exhibit.

Chronicle of Higher Education article on Marygrove's John Novak Digital Interview Collection

An article about the John Novak Digital Interview Collection appeared in the September 6 Wired Campus e-newsletter from the Chronicle of Higher Education.

This new and growing collection consists of interviews with African-American Detroiters ranging in age from 65 to 90 recounting their migration to Detroit from various parts of the South. The Collection does not seek to interview famous individuals, but to provide a better understanding of the challenges and choices ordinary people face in their daily lives and to support the goal of learning about history and human progress from the experiences of ordinary individuals. The full collection will debut on October 9, but you can preview an interview now.
